The allure of Bali continues to captivate Australian travellers, with a notable 43% increase in travel insurance policies purchased for the destination since the 2022/23 summer season.
This surge has corresponded with a 50% rise in related insurance claims, now accounting for 16% of all claims submitted to Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) in 2024.

Among the most frequent issues cited in the Bali claims were gastrointestinal illness, reef-related injuries, and incidents involving wildlife, such as monkey bites. Medical incidents tied to foodborne illnesses in particular saw a spike, with gastroenteritis-related claims rising by 79% in January 2025 compared to the same month the year prior. More than half of all gastro claims received by SCTI since November 2024 originated from Indonesia.

Costs for these claims in Bali varied widely, from as little as $21 to upwards of $30,000, averaging slightly over $1,000. Jess Strange, SCTI’s Chief Customer Officer, highlighted the importance of comprehensive travel insurance, noting that the insurer supported 91 emergency medical events involving Australians in Bali last year. The most complex involved a young person experiencing seizures, who required an air ambulance home at a cost of around $232,000.

Accidents involving mopeds and scooters also remain prevalent. SCTI processed 21 such claims in 2024, two of which led to hospital stays. In one incident, a traveller had their bag stolen while stopped on a scooter to check directions, highlighting non-medical risks also faced by tourists.

Despite the rise in claims, Thailand continues to lure Australians to its shores. The HBO hit series The White Lotus appears to have played a part, with SCTI recording a 19.8% lift in travel insurance policies for Thailand between the show’s release in February 2025 and 11 May, compared to the same period last year.

These statistics underscore the importance of securing comprehensive travel insurance when visiting Bali. Travellers are advised to ensure their policies cover a wide range of potential incidents, including medical emergencies, theft, and accidents involving motor vehicles. Additionally, being aware of common risks and taking preventive measures can help mitigate the likelihood of encountering issues during their stay.

In conclusion, while Bali remains a favoured destination for Australians, the associated rise in travel insurance claims highlights the need for adequate preparation and coverage. By understanding the common risks and ensuring appropriate insurance, travellers can enjoy their Balinese adventures with greater peace of mind.
